Roc Oil Awarded National Invention Patent for Oil and Gas Development Technology

Drilling Operations

Recently, Roc Oil (China) Company was granted a National Invention Patent Certificate by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) for its innovation titled “Method and System for Establishing a Well-Seismic Relationship Across the Entire Wellbore Section Based on Drilling Index Dx.” This achievement marks a significant milestone in the company’s integrated research on geology and drilling & completion within the field of oil and gas exploration and development. The patented technology was jointly developed by Mr. Shi Wenhui, Senior Geological Expert, and Mr. Zhou Yihui, Vice President -Subsurface.

As a veteran petroleum geologist, Mr. Shi and technical leader Mr. Zhou have jointly played a leading role in multiple projects, including the Weizhou 12-8 East Oilfield Development in the Beibu Gulf, the Block 03/33 Exploration Wells in the Pearl River Mouth Basin, and the Block 22/12 Development Wells in the Beibu Gulf. Drawing on years of offshore drilling and completion experience in complex geological settings, they conducted an in-depth study of the relationship between formation responses and real-time drilling data. Their research led to the innovative development of a well-seismic integration model using the Drilling Index (Dx) as a core parameter — providing an efficient and scientific solution for geosteering and reservoir identification during drilling operations, thereby enhancing drilling accuracy and development efficiency

Adhering to its philosophy of “Innovation-Driven, Technology-Led Development,” Roc Oil places great emphasis on building an independent R&D and innovation system, actively encouraging both teams and individuals to explore new frontiers in science and practice. Roc’s technical experts from multiple disciplines not only advance technological progress through their rigorous research and extensive experience but also mentor and inspire the younger generation of engineers, passing on professional expertise and the spirit of craftsmanship. Together, they are shaping a learning-oriented and innovation-driven technical team.

In addition to this newly granted patent, two other self-developed technologies — the Oil and Gas Development Economic Evaluation System and the Geological Sedimentary Facies Prediction System — are currently under review by CNIPA.

The granting of this national invention patent demonstrates Roc Oil’s strong capabilities in integrated subsurface and drilling & completion research, and underscores its commitment to technological innovation, efficiency improvement, and responsible energy development in offshore oil and gas operations. Looking ahead, Roc Oil will continue to drive progress through innovation, inspire more technical talents to explore and grow through practice, and contribute greater wisdom and strength to the high-quality development of offshore oil and gas resources.
